About My Photography

My journey with photography started in Baltimore, Maryland, where I first picked up a fully manual 35mm SLR camera. What began as a way to capture sporting events has grown into a lifelong creative pursuit.

Early Influences

Growing up in Baltimore during the 1960s and 70s, I had the privilege of experiencing Memorial Stadium's golden era—attending Orioles and Colts games as a child and later witnessing the historic final games for both the Orioles and Ravens at that iconic venue. My fascination with automobiles and racing drew me to Dover, Delaware in the mid-1970s, where I began photographing NASCAR events. Those early motorsports images caught the attention of NASCAR Scene, which published several of my photographs. My passion for racing has since taken me to numerous tracks along the East Coast.

Developing the Craft

In 2004, I joined the Baltimore Camera Club (www.baltimorecameraclub.org), marking a turning point in my development as a photographer. Through the club's presentations, field shoots, competitions, and critiques—combined with mentorship from accomplished members—I learned to approach photography as a true craft rather than simply capturing images. The shift to digital photography transformed my practice, offering immediate feedback that allowed me to experiment more freely and sharpen my skills in action photography.

Current Work

Today, my photography spans diverse subjects: the challenging dynamics of my granddaughter's dance recitals, the serene landscapes of Maryland's Eastern Shore, the ever-changing moods of the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic coastline. Yet automotive photography holds a special place in my heart. As a Corvette owner for nearly 45 years and an active member of the BelAir Corvette Club (www.belaircorvetteclub.com), I strive to reveal the authentic contours, colors, and intricate details that make each vehicle unique.

I draw inspiration from masters of automotive photography, particularly Michael Furman, whose portfolio includes Ralph Lauren's prestigious car collection and the Simeone Foundation Museum. The groundbreaking work featured in The Rodders Journal, under the direction of owner Steve Conan, has also profoundly influenced my approach. Steve pioneered fine art automotive photography, embracing techniques like golden hour lighting and studio settings long before they became mainstream in automotive features.

My Philosophy

My photographs are visual souvenirs of life's meaningful moments. While I use post-processing software to refine my images, I approach this work as I would traditional film development in a darkroom. My goal is authenticity—what you see in my photographs faithfully represents what I witnessed and captured at the moment the shutter clicked.
